This is a tough hike. You will need decent footwear, water and food. It took us 3.5 hours(7k). There is a small car park that fill up early. It was very windy at the top, and boggy. Go clockwise around the lake. Some signage is badly needed to show the route(s). The route we took was extremely difficult, NOT suitable if you don't have a good head for heights. Having said all this, it was a fantastic experience with amazing views.

Great hiking trail with a breathtaking reward at the end. I really recommend this place for any one that is looking for an adventure. Bring water and food as the trail is an average one.

Beautiful horseshoe hike, If walking clockwise up the ridge would be the best way up

Awe-inspiring sites await you at the top. This is a spectacular hike that provides everything Ireland has to offer in terms of mystical views. The lough is gorgeous, but you can also see as far out as the ocean, and plenty of Ireland’s “patch work quilt” geography. This is NOT an easy hike. I would categorize this as hard. And there are areas on the ascent which are daunting and quite dangerous. Like other Irish hikes, the trails are a bit scattered, and when scrambling up rocky, muddy heights, it can be nerve-wrecking. But the scenes at the top make it well worth it. It flattens out at the top and serves as a great location to pause for a snack and a look around. This is about a 4 hour hike up and around from the car park. The left side is more difficult than the right side.

Beautiful spot, when there's a cloudless sky you can see all the way to the sea. I'd recommend doing the loop clockwise as it makes the descent either. It's tough going if you're not an experienced hill walker but, it's worth the effort as the views from the top are spectacular. Took me about 4 hours with a stop for food and refueling at the top.

This hike was quite the experience. Echoing what others have said, this is a difficult hike for sure and the path isn't always clear. The views are absolutely stunning though and well worth it. We managed the whole loop in a little over 4 hours, but I tecommend taking your time and allowing for a bigger window of possible, just to enjoy and take it all in. Save some energy for the decent as well. It will hammer your knees and take whatever energy you have left.

To say its surreal when you reach the top is an understatement. The view is absolutely breathtaking! The pictures of Coumshinguan Lough will never compare to experiencing it in person. Even the stream you cross to get to the lake doesn't look real, it looks like a movie set. Hiking boots and a waterproof jacket are essential as the weather is changeable. When you come out of the forest go right. When you walk over the steps keep left with the fench. As you walk up watch out on your right for a small wall and start your climb here. The first part can be hiked up and over or around the hill to the right. From the lake start on the left to reach the highest part, its much easier. When your sitting up the top looking down at the lake pinch yourself cause trust me it doesn't seem real. It's just amazing!

One of the most incredible places you'll ever see. It's a bit of a slog, but 30 mins or so will have you at the lakeside. Another hour of a very steep climb will see you at the summit & then you can do the loop around, but not for anyone that isn't used to hillwalking.
